    ResumenEl leiomiosarcoma primario de la glándula adrenal es un tumor maligno infrecuente, con escasos reportes en la literatura internacional. Presentamos el caso de una paciente de 50 años con un tumor en la glándula adrenal derecha, diagnosticado mediante un examen ultrasonográfico de rutina y confirmado por tomografía computada y resonancia magnética. Se realizó una adrenalectomía derecha, y el estudio anatomopatológico reportó un leiomiosarcoma adrenal primario.Este tumor primario de la glándula adrenal es una entidad maligna muy rara, clínicamente silente o con síntomas inespecíficos. A menudo se detecta a través de estudios por imágenes como una masa de gran tamaño, pero su diagnóstico definitivo es histopatológico con técnicas de inmunohistoquímica.AbstractPrimary leiomyosarcoma of the adrenal glandis a rare malignant tumor.     Personality, density and habitat drive the dispersal of invasive crayfish

    There is increasing evidence that personality traits may drive dispersal patterns of animals, including invasive species. We investigated, using the widespread signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus as a model invasive species, whether effects of personality traits on dispersal were independent of, or affected by, other factors including population density, habitat, crayfish size, sex and limb loss, along an invasion gradient. Behavioural traits (boldness, activity, exploration, willingness to climb) of 310 individually marked signal crayfish were measured at fully-established, newly-established and invasion front sites of two upland streams. After a period at liberty, recaptured crayfish were reassessed for behavioural traits (newly-established, invasion front). Dispersal distance and direction of crayfish movement, local population density, fine-scale habitat characteristics and crayfish size, sex and limb loss were also measured. Individual crayfish exhibited consistency in behavioural traits over time which formed a behavioural syndrome. Dispersal was both positively and negatively affected by personality traits, positively by local population density and negatively by refuge availability. No effect of size, sex and limb loss was recorded. Personality played a role in promoting dispersal but population density and local habitat complexity were also important determinants. Predicting biological invasion in animals is likely to require better integration of these processes

    A User's Guide to the Brave New World of Designing Simulation Experiments

    Many simulation practitioners can get more from their analyses by using the statistical theory on design of experiments (DOE) developed specifically for exploring computer models.In this paper, we discuss a toolkit of designs for simulationists with limited DOE expertise who want to select a design and an appropriate analysis for their computational experiments.Furthermore, we provide a research agenda listing problems in the design of simulation experiments -as opposed to real world experiments- that require more investigation.We consider three types of practical problems: (1) developing a basic understanding of a particular simulation model or system; (2) finding robust decisions or policies; and (3) comparing the merits of various decisions or policies.Our discussion emphasizes aspects that are typical for simulation, such as sequential data collection.Because the same problem type may be addressed through different design types, we discuss quality attributes of designs.Furthermore, the selection of the design type depends on the metamodel (response surface) that the analysts tentatively assume; for example, more complicated metamodels require more simulation runs.For the validation of the metamodel estimated from a specific design, we present several procedures.

    Is current floodplain management a cause for concern for fish and bird conservation in Bangladesh’s largest wetland?

    Worldwide, water regulatory structures have impacts on aquatic ecological connectivity. This study determined the effects of current sluice management on the fish community in the Baral River, a major connection to the largest wetland (Chalan Beel) in Bangladesh. It also examines wider problems for biodiversity conservation (particularly waterbirds) in that wetland, which has shrunk to 30% of its former dry-season size in 50 years. During the flood period, the peak breeding time for native floodplain fishes, sluices were in undershot operation (open by 16–60% of water depth). During this time, fish abundance and species richness were 229% and 155% higher respectively at sites upstream of the sluices, despite similar habitat upstream and downstream. Outside this period, when sluices were fully open, abundance and species richness were similar upstream and downstream. Fish samples were dominated by fry, which are susceptible to damage by sluices. Twenty (41.7%) of 48 fish species captured in this study are classed as threatened in Bangladesh and their abundance was significantly lower downstream of the sluices. Two alien species, Aristichthys nobilis and Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, were recorded, probably escapees from local aquaculture activities. Twenty-five species of wetland birds were recorded in the Chalan Beel. From interviews, 64% of these species appear to have decreased in the last 20 years, together with 11 more species that may have become locally extinct over this period. This suggests that widespread ecological disruption is occurring. Improved water management (e.g. gate opening height and duration) or modification (e.g. fish pass) of the Baral sluices is needed, to meet biodiversity and fisheries needs, rather than just for flood control and crop production. Improved hydrological and ecological connectivity and habitat protection are needed, as are a cessation of destructive fishing and seasonal fish ranching practices that currently provide synergistic pressures

    Slippery customers for conservation: distribution and decline of anguillid eels in South Africa

    1. Four anguillid eel species occur in the western Indian Ocean rivers of Africa: Anguilla bengalensis, Anguilla bicolor, Anguilla marmorata and Anguilla mossambica. These catadromous fishes face multiple stressors, including habitat alteration and deterioration, barriers to migration, pollution and the adverse impacts of alien species, but knowledge of eel species occurrence, abundance and ecology in Africa remains poor. 2. This study investigated the present and historical distribution of anguillid eels and the potential associated drivers of declines at the southern extremities of their ranges in South Africa. Data analysed included sampling conducted in KwaZulu–Natal and Eastern Cape between 2015 and 2020, and secondary data extracted from databases, museums and local management agencies. 3. The median extent of inland penetration increased as follows: 22 km for A. bicolor, 29 km for A. marmorata, 94 km for A. bengalensis and 293 km for A. mossambica. The median altitude followed a similar pattern. 4. Extent of occurrence analyses were carried out at the regional level in KwaZulu–Natal. The sampling data on present distribution (2015–2020), compared with historical data, suggests declines in the extents of occurrence of the four eel species in KwaZulu–Natal, ranging between 31 and 48% in the last 30 years and between 35 and 82% since the 1950s. 5. With increasing human threats in the region, especially from watercourse modification and water abstraction, further declines for these species are expected. Conservation measures recommended include the maintenance or restoration of the ecological connectivity of important rivers and the implementation of freshwater protected areas. Although eels are at present not widely exploited in South Africa, there is a need for fisheries regulations to manage sustainable commercial exploitation

    Comparison of the effects of E coli STa with E coli LT, Clostridium difficile toxin A and osmotic burdens on small intestinal fluid transport: additional proof that STa is not a secretory enterotoxin

    Using a recirculation procedure to perfuse anaesthetised rat jejunum, E. coli STa enterotoxin can be shown to inhibit net fluid absorption profoundly, while not causing net fluid secretion, provided fluid measurement is by mass or volume. This observation contradicts many reports of STa causing secretion, implying that the recovered volume technique in the anaesthetised animal over a period of some hours cannot detect secretion because of conjectured or unspecified flaws. Experiments are presented here confirming the viability of the perfusion protocol used in this laboratory but also demonstrate that if secretion were to be occurring, the recovered volume protocol would detect it. It will only return a negative finding, if secretion does not occur. To this end, the effect of two secretory toxins on intestinal fluid movement in a closed loop preparation were studied to demonstrate that the anaesthetic, intestinal preparation or perfusion duration did not hinder the demonstration of net secretion when the intestine was exposed to E. coli LT and C. difficile toxin A.. It is evident that STa itself only reduces net absorption but can appear to be secretory if driving forces such as luminal osmotic pressure or capillary hydrostatic pressure through vasodilatation are introduced, as was likely to have occurred with pithing and theophylline. The recognition that STa is a non-secretory enterotoxin necessarily falsifies several alternative methods that claim to demonstrate secretion. Since STa is not secretory many other substances identified by these methods need also not be secretory and alternative explanations must be found to explain their action. The importance of recognising that action on the small intestine cannot be attributed to a secretory mechanism within the enterocyte adds further weight to the concept that where net secretion does occur, the likely mechanism for it is a combination of increased vasodilatation together with increased hydraulic conductivity

    Municipal wastewater can result in a dramatic decline in freshwater fishes: a lesson from a developing country

    Impacts of ineffective wastewater management on the biodiversity of receiving waters in developing countries are poorly documented. Using a before-after-control-impact methodology, we measured the effects of untreated wastewater release on the fish community in the Barnoi River, Bangladesh. In 2006, prior to untreated wastewater discharge, fish abundance, species richness and water quality were similar across sampling sites. In 2016, after 8 years of wastewater release to the downstream reach, fish abundance and species richness were reduced by >47% and >35% respectively at downstream sites compared to unaffected upstream sites and >51% and >41% lower respectively compared to the pre-wastewater discharge period. The wastewater impact was particularly severe during months of low discharge (October–December). Water transparency, dissolved oxygen and pH were lower (P < 0.001) at impacted downstream sites compared to upstream sites. Nineteen species (41.3% of all species we recorded) are threatened in Bangladesh and the abundance of these species, except one, decreased significantly (P < 0.05) at the impacted sites. We recommend improved wastewater management by applying primary treatment facilities and incorporating reedbed filtration as a mean of biological treatment, into the canals carrying wastewaters. The success of such measures should be tested with fish species that were most responsive to wastewater, using the indicator species concept

    ISPIDER Central: an integrated database web-server for proteomics

    Despite the growing volumes of proteomic data, integration of the underlying results remains problematic owing to differences in formats, data captured, protein accessions and services available from the individual repositories. To address this, we present the ISPIDER Central Proteomic Database search (http://www.ispider.manchester.ac.uk/cgi-bin/ProteomicSearch.pl), an integration service offering novel search capabilities over leading, mature, proteomic repositories including PRoteomics IDEntifications database (PRIDE), PepSeeker, PeptideAtlas and the Global Proteome Machine. It enables users to search for proteins and peptides that have been characterised in mass spectrometry-based proteomics experiments from different groups, stored in different databases, and view the collated results with specialist viewers/clients. In order to overcome limitations imposed by the great variability in protein accessions used by individual laboratories, the European Bioinformatics Institute's Protein Identifier Cross-Reference (PICR) service is used to resolve accessions from different sequence repositories. Custom-built clients allow users to view peptide/protein identifications in different contexts from multiple experiments and repositories, as well as integration with the Dasty2 client supporting any annotations available from Distributed Annotation System servers. Further information on the protein hits may also be added via external web services able to take a protein as input. This web server offers the first truly integrated access to proteomics repositories and provides a unique service to biologists interested in mass spectrometry-based proteomics

    Text localization in natural images through effective re identification of the MSER

    © 2017 Association for Computing Machinery. Text detection and recognition from images have numerous applications for document analysis and information retrieval tasks. An accurate and robust method for detecting texts in natural scene images is proposed in this paper. Text-region candidates are detected using maximally stable extremal regions (MSER) and a machine learning based method is then applied to refine and validate the initial detection. The effectiveness of features based on aspect ratio, GLSM, LBP, HOG descriptors are investigated. Text-region classifiers of MLP, SVM and RF are trained using selections of these features and their combination. A publicly available multilingual dataset ICDAR 2003,2011 has been used to evaluate the method. The proposed method achieved excellent performance on both databases and the improvements are significant in terms of Precision, Recall, and F-measure. The results show that using a suitable feature combination and selection approach can can significantly increase the accuracy of the algorithms
